This job contributes to REI’s success by serving as the Software Delivery Manager for the Commerce engineering team, which is responsible for the Checkout, Payments, and Post Purchase experiences. This role leads the delivery of high-quality, customer-facing software solutions that power REI’s digital commerce platform. The Software Delivery Manager oversees a portfolio of IT services and cross-functional engineering teams, ensuring alignment with business goals and enterprise architecture standards. They partner closely with business stakeholders, architects, and analysts to plan and execute technology initiatives that drive value and improve customer experience. This role is accountable for successful project execution, continuous improvement of services, and the operational excellence of the Commerce domain. Responsibilities include setting priorities, evaluating technical solutions, managing team performance, and ensuring that delivery practices align with REI’s strategic direction. The Software Delivery Manager also contributes to departmental strategies, enforces best practices, and models REI’s values and mission in all aspects of leadership.

Responsibilities:

Leading the Way (team leadership, coaching and development responsibilities for this “manager of staff”)

  • Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the organization promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.
  • Supports the implementation of company programs, procedures, methods and practices to promote REI key messages.
  • Challenges and inspires employees to achieve business results.
  • Ensures employees adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.
  • Oversees training and development of employees directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions.
  • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews.
  • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to employees in order to achieve department, company and customer results.
  • Establishes and maintains visibility within the department.
  • Monitors operational statistics, reports trends, variances and issues, and takes appropriate action.

Your Planning & Navigating Requirements (the plans the job is responsible for creating and executing, and how the job ensures they are implemented)

  • Oversees the planning process for portfolio of projects including prioritization of projects, definition of aligned business objectives, development of solution options, and creation of cost and time estimates.
  • Collaborates with Enterprise Architecture to align and integrate business line initiatives with enterprise-wide strategic technology plans/roadmaps.
  • Drives successful delivery of projects in their portfolio including the oversight of Project Managers, Business Analysts, Software Engineers, System Engineers, Architects, QA Engineers, and Release Engineers as applicable. Scope of responsibility also includes any contract service providers as required. Ensures that development of technology services/solutions adheres to enterprise architectural standards, engineering, security and other applicable IT defined standards.
  • Responsible for projects in their portfolio to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, meet project success criteria as well deliver identified business value
  • Collaborates with all IT departments and disciplines regarding service/solution design, development, testing, implementation and evaluation. Ensures that solutions meet business needs with respect to system architecture, functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, realistic implementation schedules, and adherence to development standards.
  • Participates in change management planning for the transition and integration of new systems. Ensures adequate documentation of program development and operating instructions.
  • Coordinates with other IT departments and disciplines to ensure installation, testing, and upgrading of hardware, operating systems, devices and technologies to support new applications systems.
  • Contributes to division strategic planning, applying a current knowledge and future vision of technology and systems which significantly impact the effective execution of business processes.
  • Partners with aligned business areas in identifying current and future technology needs.
  • Collaborates with other department leaders to identify business needs; plans, schedules, and coordinates work; and ensures integration of business needs and information technology solutions.
  • Communicates with team regarding policies and procedures, projects and activities in other groups.
  • Guides the team in the analysis of business requests and needs to ensure low-cost operation and effective utilization of staff and equipment.
  • Follows the governance process for technology projects, ensuring that project goals and decisions are based upon business priorities.
  • Prepares budget recommendations for staffing needs, costs of equipment and tools, maintenance, and future projects.
  • Oversees management and support of delivered services/solutions. Including Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support as applicable.
  • Ongoing continuous improvement to services as needed to meet business needs and service level expectations.
  • Perform direct project management role for projects in portfolio/domain as applicable.
  • Creates and maintains staffing plans. Ensures the team is properly trained and staffed to handle the projected workload, both from an internal staffing and outsourcing standpoint. Makes recommendations to management regarding long-term contractors and/or additions to staff.
  • Provides management with accurate, timely and relevant information about the status of projects, personnel and activities within the team.
  • Performs basic line supervision, including hiring, firing, conducting performance reviews, setting performance goals, promotions, salary increases, developing subordinates, and managing performance and discipline.
  • Creates support structures to ensure that adequate technical support for end users is maintained at all times. Ensures that required technical tools and training are available to the staff providing support.
  • Keeps abreast of technology changes and innovations in the information technology field and specifically in the software development field.
  • Manages or coordinates vendor relationships and contracts for products, services and support.
  • Analyzes, assesses and recommends improvements in programs and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory and internal controls

Required Skills & Experience 

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or business administration, or equivalent training and experience.
• 2+ years of experience managing software engineers in digital commerce domains (e.g., Checkout, Payments, Post Purchase), or 5+ years as a Technical Lead in similar areas, with demonstrated experience mentoring engineers, driving technical direction, and coordinating cross-functional efforts.
• Proven ability to lead engineering teams in delivering scalable, customer-facing software—preferably in digital commerce or high-availability transactional systems.
• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience in digital commerce domains (e.g., Checkout, Payments, Post Purchase).
• 5+ years experience planning, organizing, and directing systems development projects.
• Experience developing long-term technology strategies in the digital commerce domain.
• Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, standards, and best practices.
• Demonstrated skills in resource management, project prioritization, problem solving, issue resolution, negotiation, and mediation.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and respond quickly to critical issues.
• Proficiency in systems analysis and design.
• Broad understanding of business principles across disciplines and the ability to apply them to technology solutions.
• Experience with structured project life cycles, systems development tools, and service management frameworks such as ITIL.
• Proven ability to manage customer and vendor relationships effectively.
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across teams and divisions.
• Demonstrated ability to build team capacity through effective employee development, communication, and supervision.

  • Experience working with third-party or vendor-provided e-Commerce platforms (e.g., Shopify, commerceTools, Commerce Cloud, etc.), including integration, customization, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to negotiate contracts and agreements with vendors and service providers.

Base Pay Range: USD $144,000.00 - USD $244,800.00 /Yr.
